About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will be welcomed and introduced to their mentor and other staff members, and will receive an orientation to the ward and theatres.

A plan of the student’s time on the ward/theatre and other areas of the hospital will be discussed on their first day (or as soon as possible).

Students can also download/have access to the attached – Learner Welcome Booklet.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Shift Notes:

Long days, early, late, nights

Students are not normally expected to be on placement for long-day shifts, although this can be discussed with their mentor.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Pre-peri and post- operative care of patients undergoing surgery in the following specialities: ophthalmic, general, orthopaedic, dental, ear nose & throat, spinal, breast, gynaecological, cosmetic.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Care pathways are used for all patients with Roper Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Patient admission
  • Patient assessment
  • Pre- and post-operative care in theatres to gain anaesthetic, operating and recovery room experience and gain an understanding of surgical procedures.
  • Wound care
  • Health promotion and education
  • Patient discharge
  • Pain management
  • Drug administration
  • Communication/interpersonal skills with patients, relatives, and hospital staff
  • Liaison with MDT personnel

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Spoke placements in other areas such as pre-operative clinics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and radiotherapy, IV cannulation and Venepuncture.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Good IT base, training room.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

A fully developed Total Hip Care pathway is being developed by the Capio Hospitals in the North- West.

This will eventually be used in Capio Hospitals nationwide.

Other pathways are expected to be developed.

Spoke placements are available in the following departments within the hospital: Outpatients; Physiotherapy; Radiography.
