What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Orientation to ward and introduction to renal nursing.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Students allocated assessors and mentors on arrival on ward.

07.00am – 19.30pm 19.00pm – 07.30am 1 half day per month to make the hours up Students must telephone and speak to the co-ordinator if they are to be late or off sick. Shift patterns can be arranged with mentors to facilitate student learning needs.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Acute renal failure; chronic renal failure; renal dialysis; post surgery (renal) and renal biopsy.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Orem’s model of nursing.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Wound care.
  • All aspects of basic nursing care.
  • Intravenous fluids administration.
  • Care of peritoneal dialysis.
  • Patient observations and weight recording.
  • Haemodialysis

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Insertion of dialysis line, chemotherapy treatment.

Pressure sore audit and other audits.
