Additional Information

The Emergency Department at Hope Hospital deals with approximately 65,000 patients per year. As a group they cover the full spectrum of emergency conditions and range in age from 0 – 100. The department has a particularly heavy load of critically ill medical emergencies as there is a high incidence of medical problems in the local community, especially ischemic heart disease as well as respiratory and gastrointestinal problems. We are now a Major Trauma Centre.

The unit aims to:

  • Utilise the resources available to ensure that patients are provided with the best quality care
  • To strive to improve our knowledge and skills so that patient care continues to improve.

Students are normally allocated to Accident and Emergency in their second year of training, for their Acute/Critical Illness placement. The department consists of a major illness/injury area, minor injury/illness area, and a resuscitation room. Students will rotate through each of the three areas during placement.

Students should wear their regular uniforms whilst on placement. Department staff members wear “scrubs” in the following colours:

1. Clinical Nurse Manager, Band 7 and 6 grades – Navy Blue uniform

2. Advanced Nurse Practitioners – Maroon

3. Band 5 staff nurses – Pale Blue uniform

4. Nursing Auxiliaries/Support workers – Pale Grey uniform

5. Medical staff – Green uniform

6. Consultants – Dark Grey During placement, students will be working alongside staff from numerous disciplines, including:

  • Age Concern staff
  • Occupational Therapist for older people
